The Kauai Drug Court commemorated National Drug Court Month with a celebration of its latest graduates, at the 31st Kauai Drug Court Graduation Ceremony on May 18, 2018.

Chief Judge Randal G.B. Valenciano presided over the graduation hearing and acknowledged six individuals for their commitment and achievements in the intensive treatment program.

The Kauai Drug Court is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. It was established in 2003 under the direction of now-retired Judge Clifford Nakea to provide alternatives to incarceration, alleviate probation caseloads, and help those struggling with substance abuse change the way they think and behave, while acquiring skills to successfully begin a new life. Today, the program has helped 212 individuals graduate and rejoin society.

Fifth Circuit Chief Court Administrator David Lam said, “We thank our partner – the Friends of the Kauai Drug Court Program, a Kauai United Way agency. Together, this support team helps us get people back into the community, working, paying taxes, with a real chance for a successful future.”
