Notice of Anticipated Judicial Vacancy

JUDICIAL SELECTION COMMISSION, STATE OF HAWAII NOTICE OF ANTICIPATED JUDICIAL VACANCY

The Judicial Selection Commission is accepting nominations and applications to fill the following anticipated judicial vacancy in the State of Hawaii:

Circuit Judge, Circuit Court of the First Circuit (Oahu)

The Constitution of the State of Hawaii requires that the persons selected by the Commission be residents and citizens of the State of Hawaii and of the United States, and have been licensed to practice law by the Hawaii Supreme Court. A judge of the circuit court shall have been so licensed for a period of not less than ten years preceding nomination. No judge shall, during the term of office, engage in the practice of law, or run for or hold any other office or position of profit under the United States, the State or its political subdivisions.

The term of office of a judge of the circuit court shall be ten years. The annual salary in Hawaii of a circuit judge is $136,127.

Full-time judges also receive employer contribution to premiums for enrollment in the state sponsored medical, drug, vision and dental plans, an offer of free life insurance policy; state retirement plan; deferred compensation supplemental retirement savings plan; 13 paid holidays each year; (14 days during election years), 21 vacation and 21 sick leave days per year. Benefits are subject to modification or termination due to changes in statutes, pertinent rules and regulations. Judges shall be retired upon attaining the age of seventy years.

The Commission invites anyone interested who meets the constitutional requirements and is interested in the position to apply, or to nominate other qualified individuals. Nominations with the nominee’s mailing address should be mailed to the address below as soon as possible and not later than Monday, April 4, 2011.

Applicants interested in applying do not need to nominate themselves for the anticipated judicial vacancies but should submit a letter with a contact phone number to the address below specifying the vacancy applying for as soon as possible and before the application deadline date.

Nominees and applicants applying for the judicial vacancy should fill out one Application for Judicial Office (JS-P-084) form available on the Commission’s website by going to www.courts.state.hi.us/jsc. The application must be post-marked or delivered to the address below on or before Thursday, May 19, 2011.
