Expunging Hawai’i Arrest Records and Sealing Court Records
The Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (HRS) § 831-3.2 authorizes the Attorney General of the State of Hawaiʻi to expunge non-conviction arrest records upon written request to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center.

As of July 1, 2025, requests to expunge non-conviction arrest records and seal related court records are handled through a streamlined, one step process by the Department of the Attorney General via the Hawaiʻi Criminal Justice Data Center. Prior to July 1, 2025
Individuals who received or applied for expungement certificates before July 1, 2025, must complete a second step. After receiving their certificate from the Hawaiʻi Criminal Justice Data Center, they need to contact the court to request that their record be sealed. Instructions for contacting the court and requesting records be sealed are available on the Hawaiʻi State Law Library website.
