Big Island Celebrates “National Drug Court Month”

The Big Island Drug Court (BIDC), is holding a number of events during the month of May in conjunction with “National Drug Court Month.” Each year, drug court programs across the nation hold events to bring awareness to the programs’ success in treating drug offenders. Below is the schedule of events:

May 17, 2014

Drug Court Community Service Project at Maka’eo Walking Path at the Old Airport Park at 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon.

     -Drug Court participants will lend a hand in beautifying this popular spot for walking and jogging with landscaping and mulching.

May 20, 2014

Drug Court Poster Contest and School Visit at Kona Drug Court, 81-940 Halekii Street in Kealakekua, at 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

     -Konawaena Elementary School and Kealakehe Elementary School students will have an opportunity to visit the court at which time the winner will be named in a Poster Contest.

May 22, 2014

Drug Court Appreciation Day and Graduation at Hilo Drug Court, Hale Kaulike, 777 Kilauea Avenue.

     -Hilo Drug Court Appreciation Day, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon to acknowledge employers, sponsors, family members, and community members for their support of the    BIDC participants and the program.

    – Hilo Drug Court Graduation, 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. showcasing the success of the BIDC participants and the program.

*The location, date and time of a community service project by the Hilo Drug Court program will be announced.

Aside from the BIDC events scheduled for “National Drug Court Month,” the public is welcome to observe any drug court hearing. In Kona, drug court is held on Mondays starting at 9:00 a.m. at the courtroom at 81-940 Halekii Street in Kealakekua. In Hilo, drug court is held on Thursdays, 1:00 p.m., at Hale Kaulike, 777 Kilauea Avenue.
