The Hawai`i State Judiciary will present a free program on “Protective Orders and Temporary Restraining Orders” from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, in the Supreme Court conference room on the second floor of Ali`iolani Hale, 417 S. King Street. The session is designed to help persons victimized by a pattern of harassment, including physical or sexual violence, verbal threats, property damage or stalking.

District Court Judge Barbara Richardson and Lepetia Letuli of the First Circuit Family Court will explain the process of filing for a protective order and describe what happens when parties go to court.

Richardson has been a full-time District Court judge since 2000.  She was previously a per diem judge, a deputy with the County of Hawai’i Office of the Corporation Counsel, and an attorney in private practice. She graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Letuli is the new supervisor of the Family Court Temporary Restraining Order Unit. She has been a court officer with the Family Court Temporary Restraining Order Unit for the past six years. The unit assists petitioners seeking a restraining order, interviews litigants prior to a hearing before a judge and prepares court orders following the hearing.

This session is part of “Lunch ‘n’ Learn the Law,” a public information series covering topics related to specific areas of the law and the courts. Volunteer presenters include judges, attorneys, court officials and other subject-matter experts.
