Barbara Richardson, a District Court Judge of the First Circuit, was awarded a scholarship by the State Justice Institute (SJI) to attend the National Judicial Conference on Leadership, Education, and Courtroom Best Practices in Self-Represented Litigant Cases. The conference took place from November 1-3 at Harvard Law School. The American Judicature Society, Harvard Law School Bellow-Sacks Project Access to Civil Legal Services Project, National Judicial College, and National Center for State Courts were co-sponsors of the conference.

The model curriculum launched at the conference focused on three key areas: practices in the courtroom, judicial education, and judicial leadership with respect to innovation in programs for the self represented.

Judge Richardson’s attendance at the conference was supported by the scholarship awarded by SJI, a non-profit organization established by federal law to award grants to improve the quality of justice in state courts nationwide, facilitate better coordination between state and federal courts, and foster innovative, efficient solutions to common problems faced by all courts.
