Discussion Forum, Poster Exhibit Focus on World War II Propaganda

Posted on Mar 16, 2006 in Press Releases

The King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center is presenting a free program titled Propaganda v. Patriotism on Wednesday, March 22 and Wednesday, April 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Ali`iolani Hale, 417 South King Street. The program examines the role of film and mass media in shaping Americans’ opinions, attitudes and national sentiment. A montage of movie clips from the World War II era will be shown in the Center’s theater. DeSoto Brown, Bishop Museum Collections Manager, Burl Burlingame, Honolulu Star Bulletin Features Editor, and Professor Geoff White of the University of Hawai`i will lead an informal discussion and provide critical analysis. Reservations are required. Please call 539-4999 for reservations or more information.

The two evening programs augment the Center’s newest exhibit, Produce For Victory: Posters on the American Home Front, 1941-45, which will be on display at Ali`iolani Hale from March 18 to April 19. The exhibit, on loan from the Smithsonian Institute, chronicles the U.S. government’s World War II poster campaign to encourage patriotism.

In an effort to reach as many people as possible, the U.S. Office of War Information established a national network of volunteers to distribute posters to factories, offices, schools, community centers, post offices, railroad and bus stations, restaurants, and hotel lobbies. Government agencies, businesses, and private organizations created poster images that linked the war abroad to the home front to inspire and inform Americans how they could help their country win the war.
