Attorney Disciplinary Board Seeks New Members

The Nominating Committee of the Hawai`i Supreme Court is seeking non-lawyer community representatives to serve as members of the Disciplinary Board for three-year terms beginning July 1, 2006. Board membership is voluntary and uncompensated.

The Board investigates allegations of attorney misconduct, and upon sufficient evidence, takes necessary and appropriate disciplinary action. It issues private reprimands, however, recommendations for public censure, suspension or disbarment are forwarded to the Supreme Court for final ruling. The Board is funded entirely by the annual licensing fees paid by the state’s practicing attorneys.

Qualifications for Board membership are: sound judgment, ability to be just and impartial in analyzing complaints and recommending discipline, and diligence in learning about the methods and organization of the Board. Members must commit to attending monthly meetings.

The deadline to apply is April 15, 2006. The Supreme Court will appoint individuals from a list recommended by the Nominating Committee.
