The Administrative Driver’s License Revocation Office, or ADLRO, will mark its 20th anniversary on August 1. This milestone year is also proving to be a busy one.

ADLRO’s mandate is to provide swift and certain license sanctions to motorists who break the law by driving while impaired by alcohol or other drugs. On January 1, 2011, the office also became responsible for administering Hawaii’s ignition interlock law. The law requires offenders who want to continue driving their vehicles to use interlock devices, which prevent them from drinking and driving during the pendency of their case and during the driver’s license revocation period thereafter. ADLRO has already granted over 300 ignition interlock permits so far this year.

During calendar year 2010, ADLRO handled over 6,500 cases. As of June 30, 2011, over 3,000 new cases had been initiated.

Under the stewardship of the office’s Chief Adjudicator, Marie Laderta, ADLRO has had significant achievements.

This year, the office is partnering with the state Department of Transportation to obtain federal grant funding for ignition interlock initiatives. Online forms and Qs&As on ignition interlock are being developed for posting on the ADLRO website, and the website will be made more user friendly.
