First Circuit Court Announces Law Day 2017 Poster Contest Winners

On May 5, 2017, First Circuit Court Chief Judge R. Mark Browning awarded Le Jardin Academy fifth grader Kelsey Carvill the first place medal in the Hawaii State Judiciary’s Law Day Poster Contest. Her teacher, Janice Corsino, is holding her winning poster.

Fifth grader Kelsey Carvill of Le Jardin Academy and third grader Sidney Mendez of Pearl City Highlands Elementary School were the top winners of the First Circuit Court’s 2017 Law Day poster contest.

Students in the 2nd through 5th grades from every public and private school on Oahu were invited to submit original artwork reflecting this year’s Law Day theme — The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy. First Circuit judges evaluated the students’ posters on interpretation of the Law Day theme, originality/creativity, and visual impact.

The winners were awarded certificates and medals and their artwork will be displayed in various courthouses on Oahu. The 1st place winners also received a pizza party for their class.

2nd and 3rd Grade Category:

1st Place: Sidney Mendez, 3rd Grade, Pearl City Highlands Elementary School

2nd Place: Hunter Horiuchi, 3rd Grade, Pearl City Highlands Elementary School

3rd Place: Julianna Muramoto, 3rd Grade, Pearl City Highlands Elementary School

4th and 5th Grade Category:

1st Place: Kelsey Carvill, 5th Grade, Le Jardin Academy

2nd Place: Franklin Hung, 5th Grade, Mary, Star of the Sea

3rd Place: Sean Kim, 5th Grade, Mary, Star of the Sea

In commemoration of Law Day 2017, Judge R. Mark Browning presented awards today to Pearl City Highlands Elementary School students. Third graders Sidney Mendez, Hunter Horiuchi, and Julianna Muramoto placed 1st, 2nd, & 3rd respectively for their posters reflecting this year’s Law Day theme, “The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy.”  Also pictured is their teacher Joy Shigemasa.  The students received certificates and medals, and their class received a pizza party. Their winning posters will be displayed in the Ewa District Courthouse at 870 Fourth Street.
