Judge Nakamura Awarded $1,500 Scholarship

Craig H. Nakamura, an associate judge with the Intermediate Court of Appeals, was awarded a $1,500 scholarship by the State Justice Institute (SJI) to attend the one-week Appellate Judge Seminar-New Judge Series in New York City from July 7-13, 2007. The practical and theoretical training program for new appellate judges was co-sponsored by the Institute of Judicial Administration and the New York University School of Law, in cooperation with the Federal Judicial Center and American Bar Association Appellate Judges Conference.

The curriculum covered opinion writing, statutory interpretation, state constitutional law, criminal law, oral argument, processes of appellate decision making, issues in judicial independence and integrity, and the craft of judging.

Judge Nakamura's attendance at the seminar was supported by the scholarship awarded by SJI, a non-profit organization established by federal law to award grants to improve the quality of justice in state courts nationwide, facilitate better coordination between state and federal courts, and foster innovative, efficient solutions to common problems faced by all courts. More information about the Institute is available on the SJI website at www.statejustice.org.
