Michael K. Tanigawa was appointed to the District Court of the First Circuit on August 26, 2010. He had been a staff attorney with the Intermediate Court of Appeals since 2008. Previously, Judge Tanigawa was a director with the law firm of Char Sakamoto Ishii Lum & Ching where he had been employed since 1996, and a partner with Tanigawa & Tanigawa from 1988 to 1996.
His experience also includes serving as an adjunct professor in appellate advocacy at the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law and as a volunteer arbitrator with the Court Annexed Arbitration Program.
Judge Tanigawa graduated from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco in 1980.
